A look at emerging ACO programs

Cigna has entered the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) arena in force. It has added 10 new ACO initiatives in 7 states. Cigna's new total now includes 22 ACO programs, in 13 states, encompassing 270,000 customers.

ACOs are a growing model of care that basically brings together voluntarily a mix of healthcare providers that share in the risk and reward of patient care. Members of an ACO are incentivized for their collaboration in better quality, more affordable care.
